Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Dry January, Marie Kondo and all sorts of minimalist changes is what 2019 has brought and I am ready to embrace it. I love bringing you all sorts of new styles and amazing sales, but I also believe in shopping your closet and getting the most out of what you already have. Let’s face it, I don’t have an infinite budget to buy new clothes all the time so making my current wardrobe work is key. I am so excited to bring you my winter capsule wardrobe! 14 outfits made up of 9 pieces (plus accessories) to keep you inspired to mix and match your wardrobe pieces this season.

What is a capsule wardrobe? It is a set group of pieces that can be combined in so many ways to create endless outfit options. It makes you get creative about your wardrobe and to pair pieces you usually wouldn’t. It is often created with wardrobe basics that are timeless, won’t go out of style and are versatile.

To me, a capsule wardrobe means less stress when it comes to getting dressed. That is why I have created an easy way for you to follow along and create your own outfits.

The idea is to shop your closet first. Try to find similar pieces that you can use to create the outfits! Of course I am always here to help so I have linked either the exact pieces I used or ones so similar for you to shop if you would like to create this exact capsule wardrobe!

1 – Denim

Start with your fav pair of denim. They are an easy piece to rotate and feel comfortable in. I have a thing for high waisted jeans and I picked a pair with a little distressing.

2 – Cardigan

Grab a neutral cardigan. Olive, cream, black, grey. Neutral tones are key with a capsule because they act as a blank canvas and allow you to use accessories to change your look! My exact cardigan is from a local shop Twigg&Feather and is such a perfect layering piece.

3 – Layering Tee

I have a thing for henley’s lately. They are just the perfect layering piece for the winter. This one I chose is more fitted and a thermal material, but you can choose a soft t-shirt material if you like!

4 – Crew Neck Sweatshirt

A crew neck knit is such a classic wardrobe staple. Dress it up or wear it when you lounge around, it makes layering easy peasy! **Tip** When choosing your colours, keep in mind how it will match with everything else. Try to keep a similar colour pallet to help pieces blend seamlessly. White is always a great option, but if you like colour then go for it!

5 – Leggings

No one wants to live in a world without leggings, so don’t deprive yourself by leaving them out of your capsule wardrobe! I could live in leggings all winter long. They are comfy, stretchy and never give me problems when tucking them into my winter boots. I went for the Spanx faux leather leggings because they make me feel more dressed up vs a cotton legging.

6 – Oversized Sweater

Is there anything better in the winter than a cozy oversized sweater? I love this grey turtleneck one, but these other options are just as cute and will work perfectly! Try to find one that is long enough to wear comfortably with leggings.

7 – Plaid Shirt

Mad about plaid? Me too. This one is a thicker, flannel plaid that I seriously never want to take off during these cold months. A good plaid shirt will never go out of style so it makes the perfect addition to any wardrobe.

8 – Long Sleeve Tee

Stripes are such a classic, so an everyday long sleeve striped tee is sure to be a hit in your capsule wardrobe. When looking for a layering tee keep in mind the length. I love a rounded hem and something a little longer so that I can knot it or have it peeking out from over a sweater.

9 – Vest

Layering is key in the winter. Grab a vest or a light jacket for an easy layering look that will keep you cozy in the winter and help you transition your wardrobe when the temperature starts to rise.

These 9 pieces come together to create 14+ outfits for you this winter. Change up your accessories and you will have even more looks. Save theses images below to your desktop, phone or even pinterest and get started creating your own outfits. Don’t forget to show me your looks when you rock your capsule wardrobe! Use #KGRCapsule so I can follow along!

This is awesome Katrina! I love that you can get 14 outfits out of just 9 pieces and you can definitely can’t go wrong with stripes or plaid. I can just wear both of those prints year round.

This is a great guideline for setting up a capsule wardrobe. I’ve always admired them but never really have been able to say, “no, I already have that in my closet and don’t need another”, though since I started the VogueFauxReal blog, I have a much better eye for it. Sharing!

Kat this was such a great post! I love all your capsule ideas 🙂 I think I have enough in my own wardrobe to create a similar capsule for winter. Thank you for this idea!
