The Best Rain Gear for Spring

April showers bring…well, more May showers! It has been raining so much here lately. I know that summer will finally hit and everything will be all luscious and green but sometimes it is hard to shake the funk of grey skies and cold dreary days. It is even harder to decide what to wear and how to still feel put together on such rainy days. I thought to brighten the day that I would share my tips for finding the best rain gear for spring!

I used to think that rain gear was just essential boring stuff that you saved for the yucky days, therefore it didn’t need much thought. Well, after moving to Halifax where it rains SO much I realised that every time I put on said frumpy rain gear I felt frumpy (surprise, surprise).

Investing in great rain gear that you love and that matches your wardrobe will make those rainy days seem brighter!

Tip # 1

First of all, think about what you wear. Do you tend to stick to certain colours? Do you dress up for business or do you mostly wear casual clothes? These are important questions because, although you have several shoes and jackets for the other seasons, very often you only own one or two pairs of rain boots and rain jacket. Make sure they blend with your wardrobe!

I bought my first pair of Hunter boots when I saw a crazy sale! I really wanted a pair so bad and they only had one pair left in my size…in a bright green. I bought them and was SO excited to finally have Hunter boots but when I started to wear them I realized that I really didn’t like the colour! Well, I liked the colour and thought they were super cute but they didn’t match anything I owned. And trying to convince my husband that I need a second pair of Hunter rain boots because of the colour? Let me tell you that it was not an easy feat!

Tip # 2

Shop for a rainy day set. Find boots you love and make sure they match your rain jacket. While your at it, get an umbrella that matches too! This may sound silly but goes along the same premise as tip #1. If your pieces don’t match then when you grab for them you end up feeling as frumpy as the rainy day itself. Now they don’t have to be matchy matchy and not everything needs to be black. Let me give you some examples:

I’m obsessed with the Oxblood Hunter boots (yes, finally a colour I have thought about!) They would go perfectly with this rain jacket and this umbrella.

Or what about a gorgeous olive set? Have fun with prints and patterns like mixing an olive jacket with leopard boots.

Want something more bright and playful? How about your traditional yellow?

Whichever colour you choose, make sure it fits in with your wardrobe and makes you feel good!

Tip # 3

Make your spring rain jacket work overtime in your wardrobe and find cute flats to pair with it. That way you can wear the jacket easily on cooler windy days when clunky rain boots may not be necessary. Spring in Canada can last a lifetime and be so up and down with the weather. Investing in great outerwear will save you from cursing the weatherman. These are some of my fav spring flats!

I hope this helps you find the best spring rain gear! I know that my rain gear needs a full overhaul and I cannot wait to grab a cute set that will make me enjoy those grey, cloudy, rainy days.
