Plan Your Decor With a Mood Board

Do you ever sit in your house and dream up decor ideas? All these ideas come rushing in but, sometimes it can be challenging to envision the space all put together. With our new home I wanted to be picky with our decor and try to really think out the vibe that I wanted instead of grabbing pieces on a whim and hoping they go together.

I saw a girlfriend put together a spreadsheet of pieces and I was totally inspired! Since that moment I have created mood boards for every room in my home. They not only allow me to envision my design but also keep me on track with spending and shopping because I don’t often pick up random pieces. I shared my master bedroom mood board with you when I did a bedroom refresh, but today I am showing you how to create your OWN home decor mood board as I plan out my living room.

I don’t know how to classify my style. It is a bit traditional, a bit boho, a bit romantic and a bit mid-century modern. That is one thing I love about design – you don’t have to stick to one style. Combining elements give a unique vibe to your space. I knew I wanted a new couch, a couple accent chairs, and some side tables to complete the room. I stumbled across AllModern.com and fell in love with their variety of home decor (plus their amazing price points!) I have added easy links below to my fav pieces for you!

Step 1 – Browse online and save images of pieces you love!

A mood board is essentially a collage of images. I like to use actual home decor shops when creating my mood board because I know I can purchase those exact pieces, but feel free to pull images from Pinterest of IG to help create the vibe you want! Create a folder on your desktop and save the stock images of each item you like.
** TIP **
Create a word document or a note and copy & paste the links of each item as well. That will make it super easy to shop those pieces when you are ready!

Step 2 – Create your own design page in Canva

Canva is a free website / app that you can use to create unique images, posters, and graphics. Sign up with a login and click “create your own design” that is 1800×1800 in size. Once you open the design you will have the option to upload your saved stock images. Click and drag them onto your design!

Step 3 – Set up your room!

Move the images around to create a mock up of your living room. This will allow you see how each pieces goes together. The beauty is you can delete and add items as you go along.

I am still undecided on the look I want in my living room so I came up with 2 mood boards. One is soft and neutral, where the other is warm and bright. That is the hardest part of home decor, in my opinion! There are just so many cute styles that I love. Either way, both mood boards bring out the midcentury modern look I really like (and is on trend) as well as the soft traditional feels.

Creating a mood board allows you to see your design come together. It helps match your linens and helps you see where you need to add colour or texture. The biggest thing I love is that it keeps me on track when I am shopping. I purposefully shop the exact items I need instead of coming home with multiple decor pieces that I love but just don’t match the space.

Now that I have created my designs, I need help choosing! Which one do you like better?
