Maximize your wardrobe -a mini capsule wardrobe

I know I can’t be the only one who gets in a wardrobe rut.  You know, those times where you just grab for the same t shirt and jeans over and over (or actually sweatpants and sweater!)  Your closet is full of clothes but you feel like you have nothing to wear. I go through this at least once a season, but instead of running out and buying up a whole new wardrobe I get creative.

A mini capsule wardrobe is the best way to update and maximize your closet without breaking the bank!

If you have been following along my blog you are familiar with my 5×5 style challenges.  If not, let me give you a quick run down.  Choose 5 pieces from your wardrobe and mix&match them to create 5 different outfits.  Use your shoes and accessories to help create unique looks.  You can choose a theme (like work wear or on-the-go-mom) or even a colour scheme to help you focus on ideas.  This is essentially creating a capsule wardrobe that you can re-wear to create several looks.

Get creative

Use layers, tuck in a dress, knot your tee and rock those accessories!  The idea of the challenge is to find new looks that you don’t automatically gravitate towards.  Can you imagine if you did 2 challenges, each with 5 pieces?  You would create 10 unique looks, plus even more when you blend your two challenge pieces together!
Wanna give it a try?  Here are a few ways to start your own mini capsule wardrobe:
 – Grab that one piece in your closet that you NEVER wear and build your capsule around it.
 – Find your fav blogger look to recreat, then build off of it!
 – Rock your most loved piece and see how many ways you can style it.
 – Search Pinterest for an OOTD or flat lay with pieces you have to get you started.
Here is a recap of my 5×5 winter challenge last week.  I spotted an outfit on a blogger that I loved and based 3 of my pieces off of that.  Then I sat in the middle of my closet and looked around to see what else could work and created my final 5.  I grabbed for my everyday denim and then a transition piece that I knew I would have to work several ways.  Here is what I came up with using my mini capsule wardrobe for the week!  From casual to dressy, this mini capsule wardrobe allowed me to really wear  a wide range of outfits that worked for my week.

These style challenges are the perfect way to kick start your wardrobe after getting stuck in a rut and a great way to really focus on what you already have in your closet instead of always wanting to go buy new pieces.  With each challenge I end up creating at least 1 or 2 outfits that I never would have put together if I had not been “forced” to re-wear the pieces all week long, which makes me realise how versatile my closet really is.  It also allows you to easily see the gaps you have in your wardrobe and to make a list of the key pieces to look for when shopping so that you don’t come home with the 5th beige pullover sweater (guilty…they are just so comfy!)
