We have all been there – standing in our closet starting at all of our clothes, sighing because we have nothing to wear! Bring on the shopping spree! The problem with this is that we end up spending way too much money on pieces that we either already have or that don’t match anything else we own. Today I am sharing my biggest tip to keeping your wardrobe on budget!
It’s all in the list!
I am guilty of getting caught up in amazing sales, colour trends and self soothing shopping (it really does make me happy!) The biggest problem is that you are left with the same feeling 3 months down the road. Even though you have just spent a ton of money shopping for clothes, you have nothing to wear! After years of this cycle I had enough and decided to change how I approached my wardrobe. I emptied out my closet and, one by one, put back only the pieces I loved. I decided that I needed more guidance if I was going to create a closet full of pieces I loved and always wanted to wear. These are the tips that I came up with!
1 – The List
After putting the “keep” pieces back into my closet, I grabbed for a pen and paper and started to note what was missing. Did I have a go-to blazer? What about a wedding guest dress? I love the look of a crisp and classic white button up shirt but didn’t have one!
Be realistic with your list. Choose outfits that you are drawn to AND fit your lifestyle! I like to search Pinterest for outfit ideas that I love. Try “spring outfits 2018”.
When you have a list of specific items, it makes shopping so much easier. Focus your purchases on filling the gaps in your wardrobe with intentional pieces that will leave you with a wardrobe you love. Plus, it will help keep your wardrobe on budget as you buy only those pieces you are missing!
My list this season includes:
A denim jacket (Just scored this one on sale!)
White slip on sneakers, a wedding guest dress (in love with this BCBG one!)
A few new purses (SO in love with this spring collection!)
2 – The Question
It can be easy to let a sale price blind your judgement. Next time you are shopping ask yourself this: Would you pay full price for this item? If the answer is no, then put it back. If the answer is yes, than it is a smart purchase! Keep your wardrobe on budget by purchasing pieces based on how much you like it and nut the price tag.
3 – The Versatility Test
Love a piece you found while shopping? Quickly think of 5 outfits you can create with it. Don’t cheat! Can this piece blend with the rest of your wardrobe? It doesn’t count if, to make those 5 outfits, you must buy something else! Focusing on pieces that fit within your existing wardrobe will help to keep your wardrobe on budget.
Using these tips, you are on your way to creating a fabulous wardrobe on a budget! How exciting would it be to look in your closet everyday and love your pieces?!

These are good things to keep in mind for sure. I always check the sales, and that helps a lot.

I definitely make lists. I find things I like and write them down and then come back to them to see if I’m still interested in them or if I end up not even thinking of them. Thanks for your tips!

That is a great idea! It takes the emotion and impulse out of shopping. If you really do love it when you circle back to it, then you know its worth it!

Great tips! I recently did a giant closet purge and I feel so much more positive when I open my closet now.
I’m most guilty of the clearance rack lack of judgement- I often think if it’s $8 why wouldn’t I buy it?! I’m trying to get better at taking a second to think first.

Kelsey I was the totally the same!! It has taken me YEARS to break that habit and even still my heart flutters when I see a sale tag! haha I try to think “If I don’t buy this $10 shirt, then I’m one step closer to that $100 jacket…Which do I want more”. It is hard but totally helps!

Oh you are so so right. I do this so often. In fact, I had the shopping bug the other day and a boutique I knew was having a sale. Luckily, I stuck to the basics and things I knew I needed- more comfy tee/tanks, shorts, and one thing I noticed I was lacking last winter- a tunic sweater (which will also be good for cool summer nights). When you actually know what you have in your closet, it’s a lot easier to figure out what you’re missing! <3 Jamie
