How To Top Knot

Let’s get back to the premise of this whole blog – a 30 something mom who just wants a space to talk style and life.  I would be lying if I told you that my hair is freshly washed, dried and curled everyday.  Ain’t nobody got time for that, am I right?  Many days you can find me rocking a top knot (or what I like to call a mom bun).  Actually, chances are that if you see me rocking a top knot, its day 3 hair…or I just didn’t have time to brush it (mom truth!)  The top knot has saved my life because it is a totally acceptable hair style, super cute AND actually really easy.

I’m breaking it down for you step by step on How To Top Knot and rock that mom bun!

The best way to start is with day old hair.  It doesn’t matter if it was curled or straightened, just brush your hair out to get it tangle free.  If you need a little more grit or hold to your hair, spray in some dry shampoo ( I like this one!) and work it into the roots and the ends.  Pull your hair into a high pony (I like it at the top on my head), smoothing out the bumps and securing with an elastic.

You are going to wrap your hair around the elastic (I keep my finger in the centre so it’s like a donut).  Don’t worry about twisting or teasing your hair, when you start to pull it around it will fall into place.  This part I do slow.  When you get to the back of your pony place your first bobby pin just at the base of your knot.

With the first pin holding your knot in place, keep wrapping the hair around.  When you get to the front, place another bobby pin at the base of the knot.  Keep doing this until you reach the end of your hair.

Your top knot will look different every time, but for the most part I end up with a bun that looks like it has a ribbon wrapped around the base.

You will have crazy strands and flyaways!  Don’t worry! Just grab a bobby pin and tuck them in.  A little hair spray to finish it off will keep everything in place.

Let me know how it goes!! It took me a bit to go from messy bun to fine tuned top knot but I found this to be the easiest steps!
