Who else has found themselves wanting the perfect lipstick colour but standing in front of the lip counter overwhelmed by all the choices? It can be such a daunting task to find that perfect colour. Even more so when the colour you loved on your girlfriend looks nothing like what you excepted when you put it on.
I’m going to break it down to make picking your perfect lipstick easy!
The first thing in choosing the right colour is finding out what your skin tone works well with! Do you have warm or cool undertones?
Chances are, if you have fair skin you have cool undertones. To help decide, take a quick look at your arms. Do your veins look really blue? Does silver jewellery look better on you? Do you love wearing whites, blues, and greys?
Warm undertones are often paired with olive, tanned skin. Your veins are often green, you love gold jewellery and you look best in cream, brown and green.
If it is hard to decide which undertone you are, don’t worry – you may have a neutral undertone!
These skin undertones make a difference because they will help you choose the best shades that will compliment you!
Cool undertones are complimented by deep blue tones (don’t worry, I am not recommending blue lipstick!), light and bright pinks, plums and purples.
Warm tones are complimented by orange tones, coral pinks, browns/burgundys and fiery reds.
Neutral undertones are lucky – almost any colour will look great on you!

Looking for that perfect neutral lip? Try choosing a lipstick that is 2 shades light or darker than your natural lip colour. That is YOUR nude!
Cool tones – try Anita Antique Rose by NARS
Warm Tones – try Brigitte Nude Rose by NARS
Want the perfect red?
If you have cool undertones go for a bold blue-red like M.A.C Red or Red Rock by MAC.
If you have warm undertones, choose a fiery brick red like Studded Kiss or Lady Danger by MAC
Looking for a bold, dark lip? Go for deep tones.
Cool tones – pick a deep berry like Relentless Raisin by Revlon
Warm times – pick a brick red like Sienna by Revlon
TIP – Don’t match your lipstick to your outfit as it may be too overwhelming. Wearing a bright spring colour? Try a nude lip. Wearing all black? Go bold with a red lip. Letting your lips stand out from your outfit will give your makeup a more natural look and it will be pleasing to the eye.
Use these tips next time you are on the hunt for the perfect lipstick and you are bound to come home with a colour you love!
I am a neutral skin tone but often go for warm tone colours. Right now I am loving Slow Burn by Marc Jacobs and #14 Lasting Finish by Rimmel (at your local drug store) as a great nude. My go-to reds are M.A.C red, Excessive by Younique (I have a girl if you need one!) and Rubino by Stila.

Thanks Virginia! It really can be a tough choice to navigate. I remember my first time walking into MAC and I just looked at the girl and said I needed help haha. It has been fun to learn what works and what doesn’t and now I don’t find myself dissapointed at my choice once I get home!

I was always a simple gloss girl too until recently! Actually, it was the blue blistex and maybe a simple pink gloss. It has been so fun navigating this would of lipstick (because there is seriously SO much out there)!
