Long weekends always get me excited and we just got off of one! It was Natal Day here in Nova Scotia (it’s called something different in every province just to confuse people!) and, although there were SO many celebrations going on in town like concerts, bouncy castles and fireworks, we decided to head out of town. With a 3 yr old, big crowds can be challenging to navigate. Try asking a 3 yr old to wait in line, to sit in the stroller, or to eat anything but ice cream on the boardwalk. Chances are one person will end up in tears, exhausted, and frustrated. SO, I like to take advantage of these moments for an “out-of-town” family weekend adventure.
Top adventure on my list? Berry picking!
Just 45 mins from Halifax is a gorgeous place known as “The Valley”. It is chalked full of cute small town vibes, to-die-for vineyards and so many u-pick fields. That makes it the best getaway for a fun weekend adventure!
We headed out to Dempsey’s Corner Orchard, a great family-friendly u-pick farm. The goal was to pick blueberries, but we found so much more! They have a whole garden chalked full of berries, carrots, peas, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, peaches and more. With a quick stop by the petting playground where we found the cutest goats, sheep and chickens, we headed to the blueberry field with the juiciest berries.
I love getting outdoors with my little girl and teaching her the amazing parts of nature and this trip to the farm did not disappoint. She was so excited to fill her basket of berries and even more excited to pick the veggies and pull them straight out of the ground.
We filled our wagon with blueberries, carrots, snap peas and onions before heading to check out the peach trees. One major bonus of the farm? They encourage you to go around and taste everything! Their crops run from spring until fall and we can’t wait to go back for apples, corn and pumpkins! It is by far the best place for a weekend adventure all summer and fall.
I mean, look at the pure joy of discovering whats growing in the ground!
What is your go-to weekend adventure activity?

It looked like a successful outing! I have a 4 year old so I can relate. Anything outdoors for us work too. Parks or anywhere with a lot of running space works for us. Your little one looks so cute and isn’t it amazing how they soak up everything’s?!
