5 Tips for Decorating for Christmas

Can you believe there are only 2 weeks left until Christmas? It has come so quickly. Do you start to decorate in November or are you still adding holiday decor around your home? Moving into a new home this year I wanted to switch up my holiday decor but it can be so expensive. I am sharing my 5 tips for decorating for Christmas to keep your home looking cozy and festive and your wallet happy.

1 – Pick a colour scheme

There are so many styles of holiday decor! Try to pick a theme or colour scheme you love and stick with it. Do you gravitate towards the pops of red? Are you a Santa collector? Do you love all things neutral? Home decor is so personal, so pick what you love, but try to stick to one theme to keep your area cohesive.

I wanted my decor to feel calming and not too out of my regular decorating style. I used green, gold, grey and cream and my main colours to focus on.

2 – Pillow Covers

Throw pillows are such an easy way to change your decor. Reuse the pillows you already have and just buy new covers for them. They are not only cheaper for just a cover, they are so much easier to store in the off season. When decorating for Christmas I love using plaids, flannels, knits and pompoms to bring in that cozy texture.

3 – Add Texture with Throws

Have dedicated holiday throw blankets to add in some cozy decor. I have a basket that sits by my fireplace that I have extra blankets in. For Christmas, the summer ones go in the bottom and my winter ones hang off the side. Choose a chunky knit or a cozy plaid. you can layer them on a blanket ladder to add in some colour or lay them across the arm or back of your couch. Not only does it add some texture and colour but it gives an instant cozy vibe. Who doesn’t want to snuggle up at Christmas with a blanket and hot cup of tea?

4 – Layer in Small Decor

You don’t have to rearrange your whole entire home for the holidays. I love using small decor pieces to simply add to an already styled shelf. These christmas trees are the perfect touch – add them individually or layer them to create a centrepiece.

5 – Add Greenery

Switch out the blooms or sprigs in your vases with pine clippings. Buy them fresh from your local tree lot or cut a few from your own yard! You can add garland to your staircase or lay a few springs on your shelf to make it feel more festive. I love to switch a few of my small potted plants for faux trees on my shelves! Adding pine greenery anywhere will instantly give your home a festive feel.

6 – Replace your Artwork with Prints

Okay, I know I said 5 tips but this one is so easy! Do you have frames around your home? Switch the artwork out with something festive when decorating for Christmas. I love going onto Etsy and finding great printables! The best part? Layer the prints so that you don’t have to store them. Simply take down the frame, swap the front print for one in the back and you are ready to go!

It doesn’t have to take over your home and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Holiday decor is so fun! Invest in pieces that are practical and that you will use year after year.

These are great tips Katrina! I love decor but I am not sure I am any good at it. I always seems to either run short of material or things just looks well not like Macy’s or Nordstrom! I also like the idea of adding throw pillows. It seems so simple but yet the results are amazing. I hope you had a great week and wishing you a fab weekend!
